This project has been designed to meet the following aims:

- To assist in the identification of specific needs for pro bono assistance within IBA Member Bar Associations and Soros Foundations, and in the identification of corresponding support that can be provided by Group Member Firms of the International Bar Association;

- To establish a website to serve as an online ‘matching’ model to connect those with needs with those with means of support;

- To ensure that the site is user-friendly, and to supplement the site with staff assistance for regions where internet technology may not be adequate for effective communication;

- To assist Member Bar Associations and Soros Foundations to structure their pro bono requests in a format that encourages response from Group Member firms who can provide assistance;

- To encourage IBA Group Member Firms to render pro bono activities by keeping them informed of concrete and practical ways they can assist with capacity-building initiatives around the world;

- To facilitate the development of pro bono work in regions where its reach is limited;

- To promote volunteering as an integral part of legal practice;

- To promote and reinforce the Rule of Law.

The project was developed in response to interest expressed by Group Member firms, who felt that the International Bar Association was uniquely positioned to connect them with pro bono needs across an international spread that focus on the stimulating area of capacity-building, giving them an opportunity to assist in the development of the legal profession in a direct and effective way.  It has been partially funded by a grant from the Foundation Open Society Institute.

Portions of the site are password-protected to provide confidential access to its users.  IBA Member Bar Associations, Soros Foundations, and IBA Group Member Firms have all been assigned log-in capabilities in order to use the site.
